Starting 3 October 2024, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has introduced some important changes that may impact how you use your NDIS funding. While these changes might seem overwhelming at first, the NDIS remains committed to supporting you with the disability-related funding you need. In this post, we’ll explain the changes, what they mean for you, and how to ensure you’re using your NDIS funding correctly moving forward.
What’s Changing?
From 3 October, there’s a new definition of NDIS supports. This means:
NDIS funding can only be used for items and services that are on the approved list of NDIS supports. NDIS funding cannot be spent on items or services listed as non-NDIS supports. You can find these lists on the NDIS website. This change makes it easier to understand what your NDIS funds can be used for, so you can confidently manage your plan.
How This Affects You
These new rules apply to all participants. Whether you manage your own plan, work with a plan nominee, or use a plan manager, it’s important to know that your funding should only be spent on the approved supports list. If you have any existing service agreements or supports that don’t fit within the new definition, now is the time to talk with your providers and plan managers to make sure everything is aligned with the updated rules.
Support During the Transition
To help participants adjust to these changes, the NDIS has introduced a 30-day transition period. During this time, if you accidentally use your NDIS funding for something that’s not on the approved list, you won’t immediately be penalised for it. This allows you some time to learn the new rules without worrying about getting it wrong. However, this transition period does not apply if the purchase involves illegal items, so it’s important to be mindful of how your funding is used.
Can I Replace an NDIS Support?
Yes, you can ask for an NDIS support to be replaced with a non-NDIS support, but it must be from the pre-approved replacement supports list. To do this, you’ll need to show that the replacement will offer the same or better outcomes and be just as good, or better value for money, compared to the NDIS support it’s replacing. This process needs to be followed before purchasing the replacement. Retroactive approval won’t be given, so make sure to explore your options with your providers in advance.
